Personal Experience at RIC: A Student's Perspective

We interviewed Priya Sharma, a former student of the Royal Institute of Competition in Udaipur, India, to gain some insights into the life of a student at an agricultural institute. A look at Priya’s experience in RIC is a window into agricultural education and the different experiences it offers.

It was during her childhood years when she would join her grandfather on their family farm that she got interested in agriculture and this developed into passion for her. She had a strong attachment to the agricultural way of life, and hence she chose to undertake her university education in this area.

Priya explains that the academic atmosphere at RIC was not only stimulating but also highly supportive. The faculty was always ready to guide and mentor students while the institute offered practical exposure that was unmatchable. In particular, she highly appreciated the institute’s initiatives to encourage hands-on teaching with farm visits and research projects.

Sustainability and innovation in agriculture were emphasized to a large extent as one of the highlights of Priya’s experience. RIC encouraged students to explore modern techniques while not losing respect for traditional practice. Priya balanced her approach to agriculture thereby giving her a holistic view of that field.

Besides, RIC made available to the students the opportunity to engage in the national and international agricultural contests, conferences, and seminars. These events exposed her to new worlds and opportunities to interact with other leading scholars and students from other parts of the country.

Priya also emphasized on the cultural and extracurricular activities at RIC. The institute observed several agricultural festivities where students came together to celebrate the cultural heritage associated with farming in India. These brought some sort of fun and festival into this serious academic rigor.

After completing her B.Sc. Priya studied for a master’s degree and then later a PhD in agricultural economics at RIC in Agriculture. Currently, she is a researcher at a well-known agricultural institute in India, and she is part of projects that aim at enhancing the living conditions of small-scale farmers through sustainable agriculture.
